Going over the June 27 crossword
« on: June 27, 2020, 08:52:56 PM »
Today's crossword by Kyle Dolan is his tenth published puzzle. All have been themeless. "Goranson of 'The Conners'" is LECY. It's short for Alicia. "Copacabana greeting" is OLA, which is not used in English. "Pamplona pronoun" is ESOS, which is not used in English. "Blizzard portmanteau" is SNOWMAGEDDON. This is the first time I've seen that in a puzzle. "Ones known for excellent service" is ACERS. That is a reference to tennis – but does anyone other than crossword creators ever use the word "acer"? Brand names used to be taboo in crosswords. Today's grid includes three: DHL ("FedEx rival"), ADT ("Big name in home security") and DRANO ("Cleaner brand with a macron on its first vowel").

"Transmission conclusion" is OVERANDOUT. When police officers, military personnel, vehicle dispatchers or others are communicating via radio, they never say "over and out." They say "over" or out. "Over" means "Please respond"and "Out" means "I'm ending this communication." You'll hear "over and out" on television programs written by people who are unfamiliar with radio communications – and it appears in today's crossword written by someone who also is unfamiliar with radio communications (and who holds a PhD from the University of Chicago).

"'The Twilight Zone' (2019) host Jordan" is PEELE. Jordan Peele served as executive producer and narrator of 40 episodes of The Twilight Zone. The first season began April 1, 2019 on CBS All Access. All 20 episodes of the second season were released June 25, 2020. The original Twilight Zone series was created by Rod Serling and aired on CBS from 1959 to 1964. The series was revived in 1985 and ran for three seasons, two on CBS and one in syndication. The Grateful Dead performed the show's theme song. A second revival with Forrest Whitaker as narrator aired on UPN in 2002-03.

Here are all the Twilight Zone intros, including the one from the unaired 1959 pilot episode and the intro to the 1983 Twilight Zone theatrical movie:

You've just crossed over into the Twilight Zone. "Over." Not "over and out."
