Is IRIE not irie?
« on: January 27, 2018, 10:43:15 AM »
I'd like to use IRIE, but I don't understand why it doesn't seem to have appeared before in a NYT puzzle.  IRIE (Jamaican patois for "all right") was already familiar to me as a non-Jamaican, appears in dictionaries, and there are millions of web references.  It seems like a word that should have been used a lot in puzzles and even become "crosswordese" by now (like EIRE, ERIE, and ARIE), but it hasn't.  Would including IRIE in my puzzle cause a problem?

It's not in standard dictionaries. I never heard of it. I wouldn't try it.

As someone from the Islands I'd get it and many others with similar roots, for solvers from elsewhere it'd be a little strange..  though depending on where you're from, your meal choices e.g. "Jerk Chicken", musical preferences e.g. Reggae, Dance Hall, friends Jamaican, Trini etc. IRIE would ring a bell.
