ELHI is a word that seems to exist only in crossword puzzles...along with ASEA and AROAR.
Merl Reagle outdid himself with today's "Triple Play" puzzle in the Los Angeles Times. Because a large number of answers contained the number 3, the crossword contained very few of the usual Crosswordese words. Among the answers were 3RS, MP3S, 3SIDED, 3UP3DOWN, BOWL300, 3MINUTES ("Length of a boxing round"), 3MARTINI ("___ lunch"), 3COINS ("'___ in the Fountain'"), MY3SONS and the Bernie Mac movie MR3000. "U.S. milestone reached in October 2008" was the population of 300000000. Of course the zeros doubled as O's in the intersecting words. The most clever clue was "'The Old Man and the Sea,' basically." The answer was 3LETTERWORDS. My only objection to the puzzle is the inclusion of 3SOMES. The word "threesome" has never before been spelled with a number and likely never will be again.
