"Simply marvelous, with 'the'" was CATSMEOW. It is a truism that cats meow....but what exactly is---or was---the cat's meow? The expression dates from circa 1920 and is often attributed to newspaper cartoonist Thomas Aloysius "Tad" Dorgan (1877-1929). He is also said to have created the expressions "the cat's pajamas" and "23 skiddoo." However, linguists have not found definitive evidence. A detailed theory about the origin of "the cat's meow" is on the Disappearing Idioms site. Betty Boop and Marilyn Monroe are part of the explanation. If that doesn't pique everyone's interest, I don't know what will!
